This groundbreaking series from HBO Films tells the story of Baseball using home movie footage collected over the years - never before seen video of on the field and in the stands action. Some of the most intriguing shots are in color! You even get to see some of the early heroes relaxing and playing to the camera.
Part two takes you through the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, while part three speaks to the generation growing up with baseball in the 1960’s.
Baseball - A Film by Ken Burns
The holy grail of baseball documentaries, this “9-inning” box set chronicles the entire recorded history of the game as only master documentarian Ken Burns can tell. For those who watched this series when it first appeared on PBS, this box set has added bonuses including; links to player bios, an ongoing quiz/game, and a bonus 10th disc that is The Making of Baseball.
Field of Dreams
Ok Ok, so it might be a little corny but it’s as good a display of the poetry of the game as you’ll ever see. You must have felt a tug on the heartstrings when Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) has a game of catch with his dearly departed Dad…. it’s every boy at heart’s wish come true.
The movie has even contributed a line to our everyday lexicon - “if you build it, he will come!”
Watch this movie, and then fight the urge to go plow down your backyard to build a perfect ballfield.
The Natural
Roy Hobbs, number 9 on your scorecard, overcomes a lifetime of challenges to hit the game winning home run. It’s the scene from every backyard dream.
This movie not only has an enjoyable plot line, but it is a great visual representation of baseball during the 20’s. The Academy Award nominated cinematography really helps set the tone of the story, especially the signature moment when the former sweetheart rises from the stands to inspire Hobbs (Robert Redford).
