Back in the summer of 1987 my buddy Frank Pazzanese and I decided that the very best vacation we could imagine would be a trip around the country watching baseball games!  We were just out of college, with a little pocket change and new wheels that would hold up under the miles we would travel … 

So we perused the MLB schedule, checked it against the driving distances and plotted out a trip that we have dubbed Baseballapalooza 1987.

Our trip took us to four stadiums that amazingly no longer exist … Yankee Stadium , Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, and  Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.  With a final stop in Atlantic City for some good luck casino hopping on the Fourth of July.

This video is the first episode in the four part installment recounting the adventures (and misadventures) of our two heroes and accompanying guests along the way.

Game one was a night game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees on June 27th, 1987.

A blogger buddy, Chris Ray from Barkability.com has put out a challenge to Red Sox & Yankee fans. Whichever team finishes first at the end of the year – the owner’s dog will have to wear the other team’s colors and pose for pictures to be posted on the blog.

Here at Baseballisms, we are former dog owners and are “in between” canines at the moment — so we’ve enlisted two friends from up in Boston, KC & Sadie, to act as our models for us. And yes, look closely, Sadie on the right actually smiles like that when she is being photographed!

The Red Sox contingent is captained by the renowed Big Pupi, Chris’s dog MacKenzie will be filling out the lineups on the Yankees bench.

KC & Sadie are hoping that J.D. Drew continues to set the world on fire, and the mixin’ and matchin’ that’s being done with all the visits to the disabled list keep working for the Red Sox so they won’t be caught wearing the Bronx pinstripes!

Meet Lisa Jacobi. She is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with the band Steel String Session. You will want to catch them at a festival or bluegrass venue when you get the chance, and their latest release is called Ocoee Road.

But, if you were a fan of the Atlanta Braves during the 80′s you may remember the time when Chief Noc-a-homa had a little compadre – Princess Poc-a-homa.

During a lean period for the team, prior to their amazing success that began in the 90′s, an entrepreneurial teenager decided to head down to the front office to audition for a job.

When I was 15, I realized I could walk from my high school, Girl’s Latin School, to Fenway Park and arrive during the 7th inning. I discovered at this point they were no longer taking admission tickets so I could get in free.

I saw all but two home games, and after all, the last innings are the most exciting anyway. I would then hang around until the players came out and would be able to talk to them. Yeh, I guess you could call me a baseball groupie.

After one of my missed games, this oh-so-adorable pitcher, Randy Heflin came over and asked where I was the day before. He said “You weren’t here so we lost the game.”

I was a Red Sox mascot and didn’t know it! Can you imagine how thrilled I was.
